Exhibitions excluded. Since 1974 every game has full play-by-play. Most 19th-century games survive only as a game log line. The 4,654 Negro Leagues games are counted in the seasons they were played.

Retrosheet's documented corrections run through 1988, so later differences can't be explained that way. The few left since 2000 include Danny Jansen's 2024 suspended game, played for both Toronto and Boston, which the official record credits differently. Every check and warning is in the release's CHECKS.md.

The Lahman module

SABR's Lahman database, 1871–2025: 27 tables of season statistics, awards, the Hall of Fame, salaries and colleges, plus the four tables that check our totals against it. It's share-alike (CC BY-SA 3.0), so it ships in its own folder and its license never reaches the Foundation's tables.

Every column of every table is described in the release's catalog.json and in the DuckDB file's comments.

How to use it

Parquet, CSV or one DuckDB file

Query any table where it sits with DuckDB: it reads only the parts of the file a query needs, so nothing has to be downloaded first.

Known gaps

Negro Leagues games Retrosheet knows only from line scores aren't in this release yet, and Lahman's Negro Leagues team records aren't matched to Retrosheet's teams.
1,718 people Retrosheet documents aren't in the Chadwick register's public extract yet. They have provisional ids, marked as such, that will change when the register adds them.
MLB's own data (Statcast, game feeds, this season's games) isn't included: its terms don't allow redistribution.
Park dimensions, a rules timeline, weather and travel are next: tables no open dataset has.
